October 2024: Arrival of more than 30,000 new seeds – A continuation of global efforts to conserve diversity in the face of escalating climate change, conflict and other crises
LONGYEARBYEN, SVALBARD — October, 2024 — The Svalbard Global Seed Vault received on 22 October 2024 a deposit of more than 30,000 new seed samples from 23 depositors across 21 countries, including seven international genebanks. This deposit is underscoring the urgent global effort to conserve crop diversity in the face of escalating climate change, conflict and other crises.

Despite swirling and blowing snow on the mountainside where the seed vault is located, boxes containing more than 12,000 new seed samples safely entered the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on February 27, 2024.
